A Somalian operating theatre

Trócaire helps new mothers in western Somalia

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Irish NGO Trócaire works tirelessly to bring health and safety to some of the world’s most vulnerable people. In Belet Xaawa, Somalia, they are working to provide women and girls with safe facilities for childbirth.

Located in the far western corner of Somalia, Belet Xaawa and the surrounding region is extremely unstable. The harsh environment and a prolonged drought that has ravaged the area, coupled with persistent threats from terrorist group Al-Shabaab, made producing this film one of our most challenging, but rewarding experiences.

Sharing an ambition to humanise stories from even the most remote and untenable of circumstances, The Compulsive welcomed the opportunity to produce a film about the opening of a new operating theatre.

Due to safety concerns, we had just two hours to conduct interviews, shoot the opening of the operating theatre and film a tour of the facilities. Along with these time restrictions were location limits – we were only able to film inside the hospital grounds. Despite all of this we managed to produce an engaging short film that Trócaire was able to share with its supporters and stakeholders.
