Flowerdale Tattoo

How a tattoo helped a community

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The story of the Flowerdale Tattoo is born in tragedy. The small Australian town of Flowerdale was hit hard by the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. The resilient community managed to rebuild their homes, shops and lives, and a logo was designed to remember what they’d endured.

When local resident Odette Hunter saw the logo, she decided to get it as a tattoo. Family and friends soon followed and within months, over 100 people from the community had been tattooed with the logo, many adding a personal touch to the design.

The Compulsive worked with four of the women in the community to explore what the tattoo meant to them, and how it was playing a role in helping Flowerdale recover post bushfires.
