Yorta Yorta Youth Journey

An indigenous coming of age adventure

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Each year, the Yorta Yorta Nation Corporation and Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority run the Yorta Yorta Youth Journey. It’s a week of speaking language, walking country, eating traditional foods, learning from elders and hanging out with other young Aboriginal kids. The journey takes place in northern Victoria, Australia.

The Compulsive were commissioned to document the program. Opting for a small crew of just two, we were able to connect with the participants and immerse ourselves in their world for a week. We climbed hills, waded swamps, paddled rivers and followed wherever their trail took us.

In post-production, we worked with sound designer Ned Beckley to create a rich soundtrack, utilising many of the songs and sounds recorded throughout the week. The film was premiered in the community and DVDs were given to all the participants.

Later on, The Compulsive were able to get the film screened throughout Australia on NITV, the national indigenous network. The film was also used to secure funding for the journey for future years.
